The Fall from the Nest
A gust of wind shook the branches. Oliver lost his grip before he could hold tight, and down he slid through the leaves.
Thump!
He fell gently into the grass beneath, rattled but unharmed. Oliver's gaze turned upward when he looked up, and the nest appeared to be so distant. Oliver flapped his wings, but they were not strong enough.
"Lost…" Oliver breathed softly, his black eyes full of dread.
The forest that surrounded him was large, dark, and full of secrets.
The Squirrel’s Quick Idea
From the nearby branch, a couple of shining eyes twinkled. It was Hazel, a reddish-brown squirrel with a bushy tail.
"Are you okay, little one?" Hazel inquired, scampering down the tree.
"I… I tumbled. I cannot go back home," Oliver whispered.
Hazel cocked her head. "Don't worry. I know these woods like the back of my hand. Perhaps we can find someone who can assist us."
Oliver felt a flicker of hope. Hazel’s quick movements and cheerful voice made the forest seem less scary.
“Come with me,” Hazel said. “We’ll solve this mystery together.”
The Turtle’s Slow Wisdom
As Hazel led Oliver across the forest floor, they encountered a quiet turtle named Milo. His shell shone green softly in the sun as he munched slowly on a leaf.
"Milo," Hazel said, "this little pigeon has gotten himself lost. Can you tell me where his nest would be?"
Milo blinked his dark brown eyes. "Hmm… the forest is big. But all birds leave a path. Sometimes in feathers, sometimes in song."
Oliver waved anxiously. "But what if I never find it?"
Milo smiled peacefully. "Patience, little one. Home always finds its way to those who seek it."
Oliver didn't get it, but Milo's voice was calm, and it made him feel more courageous.
The Rabbit’s Bouncy Clues
The three soon encountered Daisy, a young white rabbit leaping merrily across the grass. Her pink nose twitched with Oliver's presence.
"Ooh! A baby pigeon! What are you doing so far from the trees?" she asked, ears perked up.
"I fell from my nest," Oliver replied.
Daisy's wide eyes softened. "That's frightening. But don't worry — I saw feathers drifting by the river this morning. Perhaps they're yours!"
Thrilled, Hazel swished her tail. "Then that's where we should go!"
Oliver's heart quickened. Perhaps Daisy had discovered a clue to the enigma of his lost home.
The Owl in the Moonlight
The friends tracked Daisy's lead, arriving at the still riverside. Feathers were scattered on the grass, glinting silver in the moonlight. Oliver breathed in shock. "Those are mine!"
But the forest was now dark, and whispers wove between the trees.
Suddenly, a deep voice boomed from overhead. "Whoo… Whoo do you seek?"
Sitting atop a high branch was Luna, a sage brown owl with shining golden eyes.
Oliver's wings shook. "I'm searching for my nest. I fear I shall never lay eyes on it again."
Luna cocked her head contemplatively. "I have guarded these woods many seasons. I know the locations of the oak tree nests. Come with me, little one."
The Journey Back
Luna glided effortlessly across the night, and the others moved underneath her wings. Hazel raced from limb to limb, Milo walked ploddingly, and Daisy hopped rapidly alongside Oliver.
Finally, they arrived at a giant oak tree. Luna opened her wings wide. "There it is."
Oliver gazed upward — and his heart took flight. Up in the branches, he spotted his nest. His feathers, his scent, everything was home.
"Mama!" Oliver trilled, his voice ringing through the leaves.
A bigger pigeon stood at the rim of the nest, her silver belly shining in the moonlight. She cooed softly, inviting him back.
Safe at Home
Hazel, Milo, and Daisy stood by as Luna carefully picked up Oliver in her talons and took him higher. Carefully, she set him back in the nest next to his mother.
Oliver snuggled into her feathers, at last safe. His small wings softened as he was enveloped in warmth and love.
"Thank you," Oliver shouted down to his friends. "I'll never forget how you saved me."
Hazel switched her tail back and forth proudly. Milo nodded wisely. Daisy wiggled her ears in a pleased manner. And Luna, the owl, let out one last "whoo" before vanishing into the night.
The mystery was solved, and the adventure was over.
Oliver shut his eyes, knowing one thing for certain:
Even when you are lost, kindness can lead you home.
End lines of the story :
And so, little Oliver was back in his nest, surrounded by love. He knew that even in the biggest forest, with the darkest nights, kindness and true friends can always guide you home.
