Zaru’s Empty Basket
Zaru the little monkey woke up very early, his curly tail wagging with excitement. Today was to be Banana Breakfast Day, the day he chose his yummiest bananas. But when he swung to his favorite tree, he stopped.
The tree was not there.
Where the bananas had stood was now nothing but tall grass dancing in the wind. Zaru rubbed his head. "Bananas don't disappear!" he breathed. He waved his leaf basket in the air, empty.
That's when a happy voice fluttered down from a nearby tree. "What is wrong, Zaru?" said Kyra the parrot, her feathers shining red, gold, and blue in the morning light.
"Where is my banana?" groaned Zaru. "I have to look for the banana tree… but where do I begin?"
The Clues in the Forest
Kyra landed beside Zaru. “Maybe the forest is hiding a clue,” she said. She pointed her beak toward a faint trail of yellow petals on the ground.
Before they could follow, a gentle thump came from the bushes. Orin the rabbit hopped out, his indigo scarf bouncing with every step.
“I heard you,” Orin said softly. “No bananas? That’s terrible! I’ll help.”
The three friends crouched low to examine the petals. Kyra leaned her head. "Odd… these petals are not from any flower around here."
Orin twitched his ears. "There's a feeling that the forest is taking us somewhere."
With curiosity pricking in their hearts, they took a step further into the woods, following the intriguing trail.
The Wise Shell
The path took them to a mossy pond, where Veyla the turtle sat quietly on a rock, buffing her shell's golden-brown swirls.
"Why the long faces, little ones?" Veyla said in her slow, warm voice.
Zaru told her about the missing banana tree. Veyla closed her eyes, thinking hard. "Trees don't disappear, but sometimes the forest tricks. Look again, and you might find what you're looking for."
She picked a petal off the path. "These are from the moonvine flower, which only blooms around places that are hidden."
"Hidden places?" Zaru exclaimed.
"Follow the path beyond the old oak, and you might discover a secret the forest has guarded for years," Veyla told her.
The Blocked Path
Enthusiastic, the friends ran towards the ancient oak. The flower path increased in luminosity, softly glowing like a path for them to follow. But then they halted—the way was cut off by a wall of knotted vines.
Zaru pulled, Orin pulled, Kyra pecked, but the vines would not budge.
Boom! Boom! Stomping feet vibrated the earth. From the woods came Drex the little elephant, with a wildflower stuck behind his ear.
"Need a hand?" grinned Drex. With a single powerful push of his trunk, the vines gave way and dropped off, leaving a dark tunnel behind.
The animals looked down the shadowy passageway. A chilly breeze wafted out, filled with a pleasant aroma—bananas.
The Hidden Grove
They stepped in carefully. Glowbugs illuminated the tunnel, casting gentle golden light. The further they proceeded, the pungent banana smell grew.
Finally, the tunnel opened up into a secret grove, luminous as the morning sun. Standing in the middle was a giant banana tree, with branches full of golden-yellow fruit. The bananas glimmered as if kissed by sunlight, even in darkness.
Zaru's eyes went wide. "My bananas!" he shouted, swooping happily toward the tree.
But before he could grab a hold of one, the earth shook, and a low growl reverberated. Out of the darkness came a behemoth figure—a venerable forest guard, stone-like and moss-covered in shape.
The Forest’s Gift
The guardian's eyes shone softly. "Why have you come for this tree?" it said, voice like thunder.
Zaru shook and held onto his basket. "Because… I was hungry. But now I understand… I would never have found it alone. My friends showed me the way."
The guardian's scowl softened into a smile. "Then the grove is yours. The banana tree shows itself only to those who collaborate with kindness."
With a loud rumble, the guardian moved aside.
The creatures applauded as Zaru loaded his basket. But rather than keeping them all, he distributed bananas to Orin, Kyra, Veyla, and Drex.
"Bananas are sweeter when shared," he smiled.
The friends smiled, dined, and vowed that however slippery the forest might be, they would always find their way—together.
Lesson of the story:
In the heart of the forest, the little friends discovered that the sweetest treasures are never found alone. With teamwork, kindness, and a willingness to share, even the most difficult paths become brighter. Just like Zaru learned, true happiness comes not from keeping everything to yourself, but from giving and celebrating together. The banana tree was more than food—it was a reminder that friendship is the real feast.
